San Francisco

Out and About in San Francisco

San Francisco is a fusion of ethnicities and cultures, economics and arts, techies and bohemians, and new and old. From towering skyscrapers to canted Victorian homes and vibrant modern shopping to street side vendors, The City offers a unique dynamic.

Plan an extra day or two in conjunction with your conference trip to enjoy all that San Francisco has to offer. Here are sightseeing suggestions that are within easy walking distance of the conference venue as well as some suggested spots that are a few minutes away by taxi, cable car or other transit. So whether you want to discover the bison herd in Golden Gate Park or shop until you drop in one of San Francisco’s well-known districts, you will have lots to take advantage of.

The conference hotel, Hilton San Francisco Union Square, is a five-minute walk from Union Square Park. John Geary, the city’s first mayor, built the park in 1850. Its name was taken from the pro–Union rallies held there during the Civil War. Today Union Square hosts a large collection of food outlets, boutiques and art galleries. http://unionsquareshop.com/

A 15-minute walk from the Hilton, will get you to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art which recently reopened in May after being closed for a 3-year renovation and expansion project. It offers an internationally recognized collection of contemporary and modern art. Purchase a ticket to visit the exhibits or stop by to see 45,000 square feet of free public spaces. https://www.sfmoma.org/

Not enough time to make a trip to the museum? A half a block from the Hilton is the Veterans Mural Project on Shannon Street. Veterans have painted dozens of murals, many with political and societal messages. Stretch your legs during the conference break to view this alleyway of SF culture.

Staying in San Francisco after the meeting? Attend the James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt concert! The concert is on Saturday, July 29 at 7:00pm at AT & T Park in San Francisco. Tickets and details are available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/james-taylor-his-all-star-san-francisco-california-07-29-2017/event/1C00517148B4A325
